Zion Lutheran Church was created when a group of people from Salem wanted to worship in English (as opposed to German) in 1844. The congregation’s mission is “Making Christ Known,” which they do in their downtown neighborhood and around the world. Zion hosts a local barbershop group, the Singing Cedars, a Scoutreach group, and a Pentecostal church that worships in Spanish. Zion’s people host the homeless through the HOPES emergency shelter program each year. Zion hosts a free dinner on the 3rd Saturday each month for Willow Terrace, the high rise senior apartment building near the church, and they reach out to youth in the community by sharing their love for cooking through a summer kids cooking camp.
